Bioremediation of the soil
Soil pollution often poses a major risk to the environment. Remediation of contaminated soils is sometimes essential, but often expensive. An alternative to this is bioremediation or phytoremediation. Bioremediation is based on the principle that a number of micro-organisms are able to break down contaminants in the soil. These micro-organisms may be present in the soil or may be specially added to it. For example, hydrocarbons can be ecologically broken down by micro-organisms into water and CO2. Phytoremediation uses plants or bacteria that live with plants to remove the contaminants from the soil or stabilize them between their roots.
