Reducing visual and odor nuisance
Odor nuisance and visual nuisance are very subjective.
Natural vegetation can reduce visual nuisance from buildings, infrastructure, masts and the like. Some vegetation can also mask odor nuisance. There is little quantitative information available about this. There are good methods to measure odor load (sniffing units) but there is no information about how vegetation change would influence the results of these sniffing units. If this were possible, the study by Eykmans et al. 2013 on the influence of odor nuisance on house prices could be used to monetize this service. This study shows that houses located in a zone subject to modest or severe odor nuisance are sold at a 5% and 12% lower price respectively, compared to houses located in a zone without odor nuisance.
