Forest already present on the Ferraris maps

The Ferraris maps (Carte de Ferraris) are a collection of 275 extremely detailed topographical maps of the Austrian Netherlands. They were established between 1771 and 1778 under the leadership of Joseph de Ferraris, general in the Austrian artillery, field marshal in the Austrian Netherlands. It is the first systematic and large-scale mapping, both in "Belgium" and in the whole of Western Europe. If a forest is already present on the maps, this means that carbon has already been stored in the soil for a long period of time. The total stock of carbon in the soil is then positively influenced. The data is used in the calculation of the "soil carbon storage"

Fertilization (ton C/ha.year)

The level of fertilization is also relevant for determining the potential carbon stock in the soil. This map shows the degree of fertilization in equivalent amount of carbon. Values are based on agricultural regions, derived from van Wesemael et al. (2010), PNAS: https://www.pnas.org/content/107/33/14926 Values in the table have been converted to something that can be stored in an integer map. The data is used in the calculation of the "soil carbon storage".

Management of forests

To determine the harvest factor of forests, we look at whether a forest is privately or publicly managed. This map shows all privately (1) and publicly managed forests (2). We also use this input when choosing the operating time: we assume here that privately managed forest is mainly managed as a production forest (short operating times) and public forest mainly as a multifunctional forest (longer operating times). This data is used in the "wood production" service.
